Not everyone is totally convinced that shifting mental health care online is the method forward. “You get to understand not only what it’s like to talk to the person, but how it feels to be in a room with them.

” I’ve carried out some research into Skype counselling,” states London-based psychotherapist Dr Aaron Balick, “and it’s not the ‘functional equivalent’ of traditional counselling; it’s just not quite the exact same thing. It’s actually crucial that individuals who take part in it understand that it’s a different experience from being in the space with somebody, speaking face-to-face.”

” In terms of accessibility, it’s a great start and definitely better than nothing. It’ll hopefully lead them to ultimately appearing in the room. Nevertheless, if you’re struggling with relationship issues, attachment problems, or deeper problems, it’s better to be in the space with somebody. Skype and the internet uses a distance from your counsellor that may not be practical.”

In cases of mild depression, the NHS is now directing some patients towards online programs instead of face-to-face counselling, a phenomenon that worries Dr Balick.

If it’s rolled out simply to conserve money and there aren’t critical concerns being asked about these services, that’s not great. Then, I’m constantly extremely sceptical of individuals who are either really really professional or very very against online mental health care.

Well, if the future of mental healthcare is everything about IMs, FaceTime and ‘OMG, which neuroses R U?’ quizzes, I decided I ‘d find out what that brave new world would resemble. I registered for four extremely different online psychological health services– varying in cost from free to , 100 a month– and ran my anxieties through them all, at the same time, for a week. Here’s what I found.

What I’m doing here is examining my experience of utilizing each mental health service, rather than its effectiveness – because even the most wizard-like therapist isn’t going to ‘treat’ you in just one week. Okay, cool – let’s psychological health!

How does it work?

As seen on FB (by me, anyhow), US business is the business behemoth of the e-counselling game. They declare to have 500 certified counsellors working for them, each with at least 3 years of experience.

After filling in a questionnaire to establish what particular flavour of mental you are, you’re paired with a counsellor, who you can mercilessly swap for a various one at any time. (I got Dr. Laura Dabney, from Virginia). You then kick off an instant messaged therapy session that both you and your counsellor can drop in and out of, and which could, in theory, continue till one of you eventually passed away.

What does it cost?

You get a free seven-day trial – much like a free Netflix or Amazon Prime trial, other than with way more questions about what your youth resembled. After that, it costs from , 24.50 a week for unrestricted message-based counselling and one ‘free’ phone session with your counsellor each month. Yeah, I don’t get how it’s free either, but whatever.

Filtering that through immediate messaging may be helpful if you find the idea of baring your soul to a complete stranger a bit awks. You will not get the same connection similar to face-to-face counselling, but the semi-anonymity may make it simpler to open up if you have actually been consuming 2 bottles of rum and dancing around in your dead nan’s wedding dress every night.

She initially ascertained the scale of my anxiety, what activates it– social situations, meeting individuals for the first time– and then dived headlong into my fractious childhood (separated parents, strained familial relationships, bullied in junior school). She was pretty nosey tbh, but then that’s her task, isn’t it?

In general, the service is remarkably slick. The conversation can be a little stop-starty at times, however it was actually a far smoother and more on-tap experience than I anticipated. I even got fast reactions to messages over the weekend, which was unanticipated.

Talkspace vs Betterhelp

The truth you can edit messages prior to sending them suggests you’re not likely to blurt out something revealing and unguarded in the heat of the minute. Profound moments of realisation may be hard to come by if you can’t get an unwinded circulation going.

Who do I think it might it be good for?

Anybody with a low-end mental health issue who’s cool with getting counselled in a very internet-y, 2016-y way. If you’re living under the blackest, bleakest cloud imaginable and need serious attention (and potentially some meds), most likely isn’t for you Betterhelp Hobs
